The European travel industry is showing some signs of recovery. In most of the major airports decline vs. last year in passenger load factor has decreased. In Zurich, Edinburgh and Nice number of passengers even grew in June of 2009.

We have been trying to figure outthe best way to show you how markets in Europe are developing. We have found quite reliable sources that we can use as demand indicator for the European travel market.

We have analyzed the number of passengers that have flown through an airport or rather the passenger loading factor. Take a look at the table below and you will see some positive signs.

Indeed we seem to be moving towards recovery of the travel market in Europe. Most major airports showed less of a decline of passengers versus last year in the month June then the previous months in 2009. Unfortunately in June there were still a few markets stuck in a downward spiral; Amsterdam, Rome, Dublin, Vienna and Brussels.

London, Frankfurt, Madrid, Stockholm, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Oslo and Prague are slowly moving in the right direction. Their passenger load factor compared to last year has improved a bit, giving hope.

Even though air travel in Europe is still down, we can cautiously say we are seeing improvement. Most notable Zurich, Nice and Edinburgh even out performed last year in the month of June.

Hopefully this kind of data will help you with the revenue management strategies of your hotels and give you confidence with your pricing strategies.

We will keep you posted as we are finding more data out there to tell us where the market is going.

Cheers,
