What is the meaning / definition of Hospitality Management?

Hospitality Management is the field of management of businesses in the hospitality sector. Businesses in this sector include (independent) hotels, bed and breakfasts (B&Bs), resorts, motels, hostels, cruise ships and other hospitality establishments. A person (or Hospitality Management Company) manages the staff and services at a hospitality business. This is commonly referred to as people that manage one or several departments, like a general manager or manager.

A staff member in the hospitality management field is someone who provides a warm welcome and service to achieve a customer’s needs, wants and high standards. It is also important to have a welcoming environment for staff and customers for repeat business and creating staff satisfaction.

Because of the tough demands to achieve excellent service at all times and to quickly and quietly deal with problematic situations, this job is not for everyone. Skills that are needed for this job are people skills, confidence in a management role and versatility in approaching others. People in hospitality management need to be diverse in the way they approach situations since they are dealing with the public and unpredictable people. Sympathy & Empathy for customers’ & employees needs and situations is an essential skill to have when managing a hospitality establishment.
