What is the meaning / definition of IATA in the hospitality industry?

IATA stands for: International Air Transport Association. It is a trade association of airline companies which operates international services and establishes standard practices.

IATA accredits travel agents throughout the world. This certification includes issuance of an ID-code, termed an IATA number.

IATA numbers are used as the travel agent identifier in reservations to allow suppliers, including hotels, to pay their commissions.

The association consists of around 265 airlines, primarily major carriers, representing 117 countries. Based in Montreal, Canada with executive offices in Geneva Switzerland.
