Geocoding

What is the meaning / definition of Geocoding in the hospitality industry?

Geocoding is the process of converting addresses into geographic coordinates (using degrees of latitude and longitude).

The defining of locations is useful for the places of interests (i.e. a Hotel) to be placed as points on a map, similar to putting pins on a paper map.

Geocoding is mainly used by GDS to easily track the location of the desired venue or the hotel. It is more convenient to use the unique Geo-Code to find the property rather than the address.

Example: Hotel Plaza in New York City.

The address is:
768 5th Ave, New York, NY 10019, USA
The Geocode is:
Latitude: 40.764609040ยฐ 45โ€ฒ 52.59โ€
Longitude: 73.974355073ยฐ 58โ€ฒ 27.68โ€ W
